A Delightful, Confounding, and Well-Researched Biography

John Nathan-Turner was a polarizing figure. His long tenure as producer of Doctor Who included some of the show's highlights and the show's tortuous decline and cancellation. Yes, there is scandal here -- sex, booze, venality! However this is not just a tell-all of Nathan-Turner and his partner hunting for sexual conquests at conventions. This is also an insightful oral history of how television was produced at the BBC. Indeed, it is one of the great histories of Doctor Who.

Nathan-Turner was a man of great ambition but limited vision. His strengths (finances, publicity, brand development, and interaction with fandom) were ahead of this time. His weaknesses (scripts, hiring talent, character development, and...well...taste) damaged the show. But a showman he was! Marson captures Nathan-Turner's zeal, his addict-like tastes, his unapologetic gay identity, and his leaden pomposity.

This book bubbles along at a good pace. Marson does an astonishingly good job at organizing his material. At times, the book is simply a series of quotes. As such, it is more an oral history than a traditional biography. Still, it is one hell of a ride written by an author who knows the late 20th century BBC inside and out.

Fascinating

I'm not sure why this book seems so hard to track down, because it's a fascinating account of John Nathan Turner's life. He was clearly a complex man, and the book was occasionally very sad since it seemed that his initial promise was ebbing away. Marson does a very good job of holding the narrative together, although there were one or two times when the book became just a long series of quotes. Still, worth reading!

On March 2 and 3, 1859, the largest auction of slaves in American history took place in Savannah, Georgia. More than 400 slaves were sold. On the first day of the auction, the skies darkened and torrential rain began falling. The rain continued throughout the two days, stopping only when the auction had ended. The simultaneity of the rain storm with the auction led to these two days being called "the weeping time." Master storyteller Julius Lester has taken this footnote of history and created the crowning achievement of his literary career.

Julius Lester tells the story of several characters including Emma, a slave owned by Pierce Butler and caretaker of his two daughters, and Pierce, a man with a mounting gambling debt and household to protect. Emma wants to teach his daughters-one who opposes slavery and one who supports it-to have kind hearts. Meanwhile, in a desperate bid to survive, Pierce decides to cash in his "assets" and host the largest slave auction in American history. And on that day, the skies open up and weep endlessly on the proceedings below.

Using the multiple voices of enslaved Africans and their owners, Julius Lester has taken a little-known, all-true event in American history and transformed it into a heartbreaking and powerfully dramatic epic on slavery, and the struggle to affirm humanity in the midst of it.

Based upon actual historical characters Pierce Butler and his ex-wife Fanny Kemble, the story begins during The Weeping Time, the largest slave auction that was held in Georgia in 1859. In a rain as hard as regret, that infamous event saw hundreds of families, marriages, and lovers torn apart as slave owner and plantation master Pierce Butler sold hundreds of slaves to pay off his gambling debts. This ain't rain. This is God's tears one slave intones as the auction begins. Lester's lyrical dialogue performed by different voices creates a powerful statement on the blinding injustice and cruelty of slavery. Narrator Dion Graham exudes a quiet intensity as slaves, owners, abolitionists, and children of slave and slave-master families tell their stories. Listeners will absorb the aching reality of slave life and get a sense of the monumental injustice of many lives sacrificed to support a way of life for a privileged few. Lester's literary device of using interludes in which characters reflect on their lives since the auction adds dimension and substance to this outstanding production. Children may be jarred by the frequent use of the word nigger. Used in this historical context, the language helps to illustrate how people perceived African Americans. *Starred Review* Gr. 6-9. From his first book, To Be a Slave (1968), Lester has told the history of slavery through personal accounts that relay the dehumanizing message of the perpetrators. Here he draws on historical sources to fictionalize a real event: the biggest slave auction in American history, which took place in Savannah, Georgia, in 1859. He imagines the individual voices of many who were there, adults and kids, including several slaves up for sale, the auctioneer, and the white masters and their families buying and selling the valuable merchandise. The huge cast speaks in the present tense and sometimes from the future looking back. A note fills in the facts. The horror of the auction and its aftermath is unforgettable; individuals whom the reader has come to know are handled like animals, wrenched from family, friends, and love. Then there's a sales list with names, ages, and the amount taken in for each person. Brave runaways speak; so does an abolitionist who helps them. Those who are not heroic are here, too, and the racism is virulent (there's widespread use of the n-word). The personal voices make this a stirring text for group discussion. Older readers may want to go on from here to the nonfiction narratives in Growing Up in Slavery (see adjacent review). Hazel Rochman

Great Book But Don't Buy if You Already Own the Other "Williams-Sonoma Collection:" Books

I was really excited to get this book because I love the Williams-Sonoma cookbooks. Unfortunately, if you have already purchased some of the other cookbooks from the "Collection" series, you'll end up getting the same recipes again. I know for certain that the The Williams-Sonoma Collection: Cookies and The Williams-Sonoma Collection: Dessert are repeated in this book and from the looks of it, it seems that the The Williams-Sonoma Collection: Muffins, fruit dessert, and possibly the pie and tart one are in here, too. I'm not certain because I don't own those three.

Anyways, if you do not own any of those cookbooks already, you should definitely invest the $25 in this collection, it's great!

definitely a beautiful cookbook and very nice layout, but..

It's definitely a beautiful cookbook and has a very nice layout. However, I've had it for nearly a year now, and the recipes just haven't been very wow-ing. Made one the other day, the Apple Crisp where I just said, you know, this is ridiculous, I need to write a review on this, because the recipie like the others just fails. Overall the recipes are just too overloaded with sugar and has to be cut down. Not only was the Apple Crisp way too sweet, it didn't even fit the reccomended size baking dish, was way under proportioned. Too bad, I bought this based on all the "fantastic" reviews, and just not sharing the same enthusiasm for it. It will probably end up at the Tidal Wave used book store. So frustrating and disappointing spending a considerable amount of money on something from a seemingly reputable source, thinking at least most of these recipes must have been thoroughly tested, thinking I'm are going to have a great reference to cook from.... and no, no and no.

great baking book

Gve this as a Christms present to my nephew this year. My daughter has a copy as well. This is a great comprehensive baking book. It covers just about everything. The directions are clear and understandable. The pictures are beautyful and make you want to bake. My nephew is a new bakes who, prior to this book has never made anything that did not come out of a box. Since he received this book he has expanded his baking and feels comforatble trying new things. A great choice for a new or accomplished baker.

Too Basic

I agree with a previous reviewer who said "The author scratches surfaces, without really covering anything in any depth." This book is more of a beach-read. Lots of fluff and very little depth. You can find most information just by doing an internet search.

Why the Amazon site is better than the app...

I made the mistake of buying this book via the Amazon iPhone app, which provided much less information than the website - lesson learned. I was looking for a book to help deal with my problems of procrastination, and sure this might touch on that in some way, but mostly its about people who need to deal with losing their tempers, over-eating, and not taking responsibility for their actions - not what I was looking for. I only read a few pages into before realising how wrong for me this book is and am now looking to return it and get something different. Basically, if you have problems with overreacting in stressful situations or escaping from emotionally salient situations via food/alcohol/etc then this may be for you (I haven't read all of it to know if its any good) but if you are just looking for something relating to procrastination, this is NOT the book for you.
