Brilliant - an accessible, interesting read, rigorously researched & referenced, scholarly and fascinating.
By A. I. McCulloch
Initially I was sceptical of the value of this book. Flicking through the list of sexual myths I found no belief that I subscribed to, although as a 57 year old heterosexual woman there were plenty that were whispered around in my formative years.
'You can't get pregnant the first time' was debunked by several girls around my age in the large high school I attended; 'You can tell if someone is gay just by looking at them' was a view voiced by many men of my father's generation – and there were many more.

This book is so much more than just a debunking of myths however, opening up many alternative lines of thought. It examines the roots of myths, the research that has disproved the myths, and the cultural mindsets that have maintained or partly maintained the myths in some cases, particularly in popular culture and the media.

It manages to tread the line between popular accessibility and scholarly research beautifully with up to date facts, carefully examined, but written in language that the layman can understand.

There are nine major chapters of the book, each with a helpful subtitle to explain the contents. The first section 'Body Parts' – 'Who has what and how it works' debunks myths involving size, body odour, male circumcision, the G-spot, hormones, and sexual orientation.

I wish I'd had access to Chapter 5, 'Conception and contraception: Illusions and Delusions' as a teen bride. Whilst I've gained a lot of knowledge since and the information is no longer required, the chapter made for a fascinating read.

For those accessing the book for use in research/essays/dissertations, the research referenced throughout is first – class, every chapter is packed with academic references. These are helpfully included at the end of subsections to which they refer, rather than as pages at the end of chapters.
Each chapter heading also has the book's own reference at the foot of the page. This great news for those (like me in the distant past) who have photocopied whole chapters in academic libraries and then realised they have no record of the source.

A keen investigative eye by the authors on the research of others, particularly qualitative research, puts forwards some robust arguments throughout challenging established theories without ever going into the realm of the bizarre.
The authors acknowledge themselves that being in the USA, their cultural references have that bias, but they are not blind to research from elsewhere. I am in the UK and found the book far more accessible in this aspect than I had expected.

This is a scholarly but very readable book, one that can definitely be read for interest outside academia without losing credibility. Recommended for anyone with a professional interest in the subject, but for the interested lay person as well.

Disclaimer: I received a copy to review without cost under the UK's Vine Voices scheme.

Great Read for Anyone Interested in Sexuality
By Dr. Serena McKenzie
This is a great read, both for sexuality professionals as well as anyone interested in learning more about sexuality in general. Backed by lengthy research references, the information provided gives evidence based commentary on numerous areas of sexuality in modern culture of commonplace interest and brings intriguing clarity to some controversial topics.
