you'll understand your role a little better and probably pick a few nuggets up

I was re-reading edition 2 of this book and got halfway through. Realized there was a third edition and went back and re-read the new one. There isn't a huge difference and there's a ton of value to be mined with either version but the new one has several new chapters - including one that was very much worth it.

No matter where you are in your career, read this book. As an employee, you'll understand your boss and other teams. As a leader, you'll understand your role a little better and probably pick a few nuggets up.

Should be required reading for every front-line manager of software engineers

Concrete practical advice, in short easy-to-digest chunks. I think this is as close to perfect as I've seen so far. What else could a harried manager ask for?

Background: I found this book by accident, flipping through pages in a book store. A half-hour-later, I realized I was still there, standing there reading page by page with great intent. So I bought it. And sat up late reading it all in a couple of late nights. Great. Instead of the big heavyweight "management tombs" full of theory that I never had time to read, this short and easy-to-read book is immediately relevant in a very concrete way, and nicely broken up into easy-to-digest chapters. Just perfect.

I've since bought literally dozens of copies of this book, and have a very dogeared 1st edition, signed by Michael Lopp. I've given a copy to everyone who worked for me in one company - "good way to learn how to manage - and also how to manage up"! I always have a copy at work, and at least 3 copies at home, and if someone finds the book interesting, I happily give them an unopened copy of the book, with the following condition: "Read it to completion. If you dont like it, or dont finish it, give it back to me - all good. However, if you do like it, keep it, for free and go buy a copy to spread the word to others." When I'm down to my last copy, I buy a few more. In all the years of doing this, I've bought literally dozens of copies, and have had only one copy of the book handed back to me.

Must-read for young adults.

I read this book during my last semester as a Computer Information Systems student, as it was a choice on the list of required reading for the capstone class. I'm so glad I chose this one--it's some of the best, most coherent information I've ever read on how to balance the worlds of tech and business properly. It's a witty, insightful look into the way that people actually think and operate. I found myself saying "YES! Finally, someone has vocalized my thinking process!" at several times during the book.

Not only that, but there are sections where Mr. Lopp lays out the expectations that the "other side" will have of you, the employee. There's a handy section on resumes (yes, I know, there are supposed to be accents over those Es, but I do not know the keyboard codes for them) and what a manager ACTUALLY looks at on them. There's a section on how to gracefully leave your job, because that WILL happen.

Basically, I recommend this book for ANYONE who's making the transition from student to professional.

About the Author
Stephen L. Morgan is Associate Professor of Sociology and the current Director of the Center for the Study of Inequality at Cornell University. His previous publications include On the Edge of Commitment: Educational Attainment and Race in the United States (2005).

Christopher Winship is Diker-Tishman Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. For the past twelve years he has served as editor of Sociological Methods and Research. He has published widely in a variety of journals and edited volumes.

Excellent introduction to Causal Inference for social scientists

This book is an excellent and relatively non-technical review of causal inference in the social sciences. The authors condense a huge literature that spans economics, statistics, sociology, philosophy, medical statistics, and computer science into manageable pieces appropriate for scholars and graduate students in the social sciences.

The authors' primary contribution is linking the work on causal inference in diverse fields together, presenting a theoretically coherent view of causal inference that draws extensively on Judea Pearl's work in philosophy and machine learning (see his book Causality: Models, Reasoning and Inference). The authors successfully illuminate the equations underlying the work of Paul Rosenbaum, Donald Rubin, Charles Manski, James Heckman, Joshua Angrist, Guido Imbens, James Robins, and Paul Holland (along with many others) by connecting them to Pearl's fundamentally graphical view of causal thinking. The authors allow readers to grasp such a broad selection of research by presenting each element as a natural extension of an overarching theoretical perspective.

The book covers the strengths and weaknesses of many popular quasi-experimental approaches to causal inference, including conditioning (aka "controlling for other variables"), instrumental variables/natural experiments, case-to-case matching, propensity score matching, propensity score blocking, and propensity score weighting. It also presents a great overview of Charles Manski's work on minimal identification approaches (i.e., "let's see what the data can tell us if we invoke as few assumptions as possible"). Additionally, the book contains a chapter on causal inference and repeated observations/longitudinal data. The book leaves aside issues of variance estimation using these approaches, presumably because of its more technical nature and the large amount of research activity currently in progress.

This book is not a research "cookbook" in the sense that it will provide code snippets illustrating each technique (or any code snippets at all for that matter), so you will be disappointed if that's what you are after. Its value is in providing a theoretically united and up-to-date review of causal inference in the social sciences (so you will actually know what you're talking about as compared to simply pasting code into Stata/SAS/R/whatever).

This book should be on the shelf of any self-respecting quantitative social scientist, and it will provide serious intellectual fodder for anyone interested in causal inference more generally.

Great place to start learning about causal inference

I have many colleagues who say that they don't like this book because it's a mishmash of different analytical approaches and because it's treatment is incomplete. But I disagree with them: the book is a terrific introduction to the current literature on causal inference in observational studies. It provides the core intuitions needed to understand why randomization matters and how methods like matching, instrumental variables, differences in differences, regression discontinuity, etc try to overcome the problem of non-random treatment assignment. It also provides a soft introduction to analysis via potential outcomes and directed acyclic graphs. By being eclectic rather than purist in applying these analytical approaches, I think it better prepares the student for wading through the current literature, which is divided into camps who favor one or the other approach. It does not arm the student with enough knowledge to develop their own estimators or to handle questions of inference after you've achieved "identification", but then having it do so would be to ask too much of an introductory textbook. The bibliography is also great.

This textbook is the perfect thing for graduate students in the social sciences, public health, and education to read in their first semester of graduate school, along with starting on the more traditional methodological, statistical, or econometric texts. For any social scientist that currently feels "out of touch" with the causal inference literature, reading this book will bring you up to speed, at least in terms of intuitions, very quickly.

Very very clear...

Causal inference is not an easy topic for newcomers and even for those who have advanced education and deep experience in analytics or statistics. I have read many of causal inference books and this is, I would say, is the clearest one. It would repeatedly demonstrate the techniques with numerical examples unless you are completely convinced. Perhaps because it's written for social scientists, it is so clear (and sometimes feeling too clear) that I sometimes have to skip a lot. Apart from its hard-to-beat clarity, I would also praise the authors for bringing in Judea Pearl's causal diagrams along with Don Rubin's potential outcome approach (Rubin Causal Model) - two super ideas that have different ways to solving the same type of problems. This book should be one of the standard texts in the causal inference literature, along with Rosenbaum's, Pearl's, and Rubin's books.

His international television work has included fourteen Olympic broadcasts and has taken him to over thirty countries. He is the author of the Video Production Handbook, Television Production, and Television Sports Production and has had over thirty articles published in television and broadcast magazines in the United States and Europe. Owens is Dean of the School of Communication Arts at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, where he has taught since 1981.

20th Century Russian History Through Women's Eyes

The history of Russia and the Soviet Union in the twentieth century was more brutal, more costly, more inspirational and more redemptive than that of any other country. Yet rarely has this history been seen through the eyes of women - those who bore the children who died in the Blockade or the War, those who were left behind (sometimes) when husbands and sons were sent to camps, those who worked alongside men all day, then went home to work another shift before the stove and sink. In this Booker winning novel, Chizhova offers a slice of that history through the revealing private narratives of a few representative women whose lives are focused on the girl who will take the women's stories into a future they will not see. A powerful tale.

A true gem

This is a gem of a book. It is incredibly moving and terribly sad allowing us a glimpse behind the Iron Curtain with flashbacks to pre revolution, the war, starvation, sacrifice, the new order. All this intertwined with fantasy, traditional religious beliefs and superstitions, icons, saints and ghosts, and a little girl who is mute and can only express herself through drawing. The women who surround her are old grannies who have all suffered terrible losses. and yet devote all their energy and meager means to raise her and protect her and her unwed mother. It is beautifully written and is well worth reading.

A beautiful and unusual novel

Beautiful book, extraordinarily warm and vivid, with an atmosphere like no other, a dreamy combination of fairy tale and very earthy, realistic detail, about life in Soviet times from a very different point of view than we've been exposed to till now: these are very female voices, ranging from those of the three old ladies to the young mother Antonina and the child Susanna/Sofya, who will one day grow up to be an artist. Steeped in fairy-tale, history, and reminiscence with a very unusual narrative style, this is a memorable novel, though I felt the ending was a bit rushed. Still, it is very highly recommended.
One quibble--there are rather a lot of typos. Better proof-reading might be in order!

A big vote yes for Chef Marcus!

Quite an interesting story about a person with a highly unusual life: from a short Ethiopian childhood to adoption by spectacularly loving parents a continent away, to the life of a super chef on yet another continent. Meanwhile, we meet a principled human being working to strengthen an American community that has seen decline. All this, and well-written, too. I liked it a lot.

A Chef with class

Perhaps this memoir should have been titled I'm a Black Chef. Even though this was a well written memoir Samuelsson did focus a great deal of the book to being a black man struggling to become a chef in a white dominated field. I felt he complained about this a bit too much.

I have read several memoirs by chefs and believe me this profession is not for the weak at heart. These people eat, breath and live their calling. Ramsey, Puck, White, Reichel and Samuelsson did not become great Chefs by being mediocre. they about killed themselves working and striving to be not just good but by becoming the best!

Samuelsson wrote about his background being adopted by a loving Swedish couple. He had a wonderful upbringing and credits his Swedish grandmother giving him his love of food. Later in the book he goes into his Ethiopian birth country. He locates his birth father and several half siblings.

I've enjoyed watching Samuelsson on the Food Network. I saw when he won Chef Masters and watched him on Chopped as a judge. now I've read his memoir. I admire his dedication and came away again realizing being a Chef is damn hard work!!

Good read for any foodie.

This book reminded me of Alberto Salazar's memoir on running. I know that sounds odd but it is just another good story on the drive and determination that some immigrants have. Makes me feel a bit lazy at times as a native born American. Marcus has faced a lot of adversity and there are some real high moments for him in his life as well as low. I have read a lot of chef bio's and this one ranks pretty high as a decent read. I love his description of food as he travels and works at many different places around the world. It has inspired me to buy some berbere spice to try on food at home. He talks A LOT about race. Being Caucasian, I knew that a person of different ethnicity might have to think about whether the treatment they receive in life is a result of their color just as easily as it is a result of their personality. But to be honest, I never realized someone could think about it this often. He touches on it probably in every single chapter of the book. Not to say whether this is good or bad, just something I noticed. I would recommend this book to any foodie who might enjoy having a little background knowledge on the people they see on TV.
