Abraham Lincoln, by James M. McPherson

Best-selling author James M. McPherson follows the son of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks from his early years in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois, to his highly successful law career, his marriage to Mary Todd, and his one term in Congress. We witness his leadership of the Republican anti-slavery movement, his famous debates with Stephen A. Douglas (a long acquaintance and former rival for the hand of Mary Todd), and his emergence as a candidate for president in 1860. Following Lincoln's election to the presidency, McPherson describes his masterful role as Commander in Chief during the Civil War, the writing of the Emancipation Proclamation, and his assassination by John Wilkes Booth. The book also discusses his lasting legacy and why he remains a quintessential American hero two hundred years after his birth, while an annotated bibliography permits easy access to further scholarship. With his ideal short account of Lincoln, McPherson provides a compelling biography of a man of humble origins who preserved our nation during its greatest catastrophe and ended the scourge of slavery.

Amazon.com Review
Marking the two-hundredth anniversary of Lincoln's birth, this marvelous short biography by a leading historian offers an illuminating portrait of one of the giants in the American story. It is the best concise introduction to Lincoln in print, a must-have volume for anyone interested in American history or in our greatest president. In the discussion below, noted historian and author of Lincoln and His Admirals, Craig L. Symonds, talks to James M. McPherson about Lincoln's relationships with his generals, beginning with the controversial commander of the northern army, George McClellan, whose soldiers referred to him as the "the young Napoleon." Both historians share the prestigious 2009 Lincoln Prize for the year's best books on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. McPherson's Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief and Symonds's Lincoln and His Admirals were the winning books.

A Conversation Between Two Lincoln Historians: James M. McPherson and Craig L. Symonds

Symonds: George McClellan is clearly a central character in this story. In your view, was Lincoln too patient with Little Mac, not patient enough, or just about right? Would the Lincoln of 1864 have tolerated McClellan as long as the Lincoln of 1862 did?

McPherson: In one sense, he was too patient. McClellan deserved to be fired after his failure to reinforce [General] Pope at Second Bull Run, as a majority of the Cabinet wanted Lincoln to do. But in another sense, Lincoln was absolutely right that only McClellan could reorganize the army and restore its morale, and if the president had fired him then, the army might have broken down. In the end, Lincoln's timing on removing Mac from command--just after the fall elections in 1862--was just right.

Symonds: What about the so-called political generals: did Lincoln appoint and tolerate them out of perceived political necessity or because he believed that some of them, at least, had genuine merit? And, for that matter, did any of them have genuine merit?

McPherson: Lincoln appointed the political generals in order to mobilize their constituencies for the war effort. Northern mobilization for the war in 1861-62 was a from-the-bottom-up process, with important local and state political leaders playing a key part in persuading men to enlist in this all-volunteer army, and political generals were a key part in this process, which increased an army of 16,000 men in April 1861 to an army of 637,000 men in April 1862. And while we are all familiar with the military incompetents among the political generals, some of them were actually pretty good--John Logan and Frank Blair, for example.

Symonds: Why did Lincoln put up with [his chief war advisor] Henry Halleck?

McPherson: Lincoln used Halleck to translate presidential orders and wishes into language that military commanders could understand, and to translate their reports and requests and explanations into language that Lincoln understood. That was what Lincoln meant when he called Halleck a "first-rate clerk." Of course he had wanted him to be more than a clerk, and that is why Lincoln finally appointed Grant as General in Chief and booted Halleck upstairs into the new office of "chief of staff," where his clerkly qualities were needed.

Symonds: Lincoln was clearly relieved to turn over military operations to Grant in 1864, but did he also fear Grant as a potential political rival?

McPherson: He had been concerned about Grant as a potential political rival, until Grant let it be known throughout intermediaries that he unequivocally and absolutely had no political ambitions in 1864 and strongly supported Lincoln's reelection. After that, Lincoln had no more concerns.

Symonds: Now that you will be the owner of two busts of Lincoln by Augustus St. Gaudens, along with your many other prizes, isn't your house getting pretty full?

McPherson: There is still room in the house, but since my grandchildren are interested in Mr. Lincoln in bronze, I may deposit this bust in their house, where I can visit it whenever I want (they live ten miles away). Read more

From Publishers Weekly
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian McPherson (Battle Cry of Freedom) contributes to the slew of Lincoln biennial books with this succinct biography, weighing in at a lean 70 pages (plus notes), that delivers gracefully on McPherson's promise to capture "the essential events and meaning of Lincoln's life without oversimplification or overgeneralization." McPherson is a precise writer with a masterful command of the subject, guiding readers through the evolution of Lincoln's thinking on race, his lifelong struggle with depression, his improbable rise to political power, his anguish over the breakup of the union and his determination to see it made whole again. For anyone wanting to fill the gaps in their understanding of the Great Emancipator by the end of President's Day, this efficient account from a noted Civil War scholar is a near-perfect solution.

From Booklist
Foremost Civil War historian McPherson believes that though the Lincoln bicentenary will bestow many big books, “there is room for a brief biography that captures the essential events and meaning of Lincoln’s life.” His pellucid attempt just may become the primer of choice on the great man. If no one moderately acquainted with Lincoln’s biography will learn any big new thing here, many may find the small fact they hadn’t known. For instance, it’s common knowledge that Lincoln suffered from depression but not that he had a “morbid fondness for William Knox’s lugubrious poem, ‘Mortality’” (“The young and the old, the low and the high, / Shall molder to dust, and together shall lie”), which he recited so often that people thought he had written it. McPherson keeps Lincoln’s antislavery and indivisible-union sentiments front and center and his feeling for the common person as a leitmotif throughout. If McPherson scants anything very noteworthy, it is Lincoln’s legislative record. Fortunately, George McGovern’s only twice-as-large Abraham Lincoln covers that. Readers still wary of big books should try McGovern next. --Ray Olson

Old Abe on the Down Low
By J. M. Jacobs
Speaking as someone who admires Abraham Lincoln to a very deep degree, I found this small but powerful biography to be a beautiful addition to my collection of hefty Lincoln tomes.

The book itself in hardcover is a joy to hold with its compact size, readable typeface and bound-in ribbon bookmark. Whoever worked on this project obviously did it as a labor of love. They worked the details on this one.

You can't honestly compare this work to others like Carl Sandberg's "Lincoln" or "With Malice Towards None" or even my nice coffee table book of photographs taken of Lincoln. This work COMPLEMENTS those more comprehensive volumes. That said, it is not incomplete. It does an excellent job of hitting the hundreds of high - and low - points in Lincoln's too brief life. The pace moves quickly and precisely along so that you never have the feeling that you're being 'written down to' if that's the phrase I'm looking for. This one has NOT been dumbed down for the reader.

Personally I see this smaller volume as an 'annual read' to remind me of just how special Lincoln was as a man and as our nation's leader. He was willing, even at great personal cost, to do the right thing on the toughest, most entrenched issues in our nation's history to that point. Through all that he had to work through, he never lost his sense of empathy towards all who were involved. He knew personally what it was like to lose in what he thought was a good cause.

And I guess that's what stands out most about this very brief work. As you read along, you still get the sense of Lincoln as a man and as our finest President, and you do it in such a short time! What's that worth these days?

This would make an ideal first book on Lincoln OR it would make a fine addition to a collection of works on Lincoln... and it won't take you four score and seven years to read it.

Interesting Overview of a Truly Great Man
By Brandon J. Smith
One thing's for sure: this is a very short book. Not only is it a mere 65 pages, but the pages themselves are rather short. I read this in one sitting, and it took me less than an hour and a half (I would say that I read at a moderate pace).

I must admit, I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was reading a magazine article or a chapter in a larger book about the great American presidents. I felt at times that rather than seeing a concise account of Lincoln's life, the author just breezed through the telling, i.e. This happened, then this happened, then this happened. Rather than painting a full picture of Lincoln, the book zeroes in on how a man from Illinois came to win the Civil War and free the slaves. No doubt, that's the driving force of any Lincoln biography, but to devote merely a couple of pages to Mary Todd is to ignore the fact that Lincoln married and lived with a woman with deep psychological problems. Lincoln's own depression is glossed over. And there is no mention, for example, of his premonitions regarding his own death. While the Big Events are accounted for here, the "poetry" of his life is completely ignored.

On the other hand, I wasn't in the mood to sit down with a massive, 800 page biography of Lincoln. It was refreshing to read about him and not get bogged down in every last detail of every Lincoln/Douglas debate or of every Civil War battle. And, as I mentioned, I read this in one sitting. This is written in clear, concise language, and the story itself is among the most compelling (if not THE most compelling) in our nation's history. McPherson does not talk down to the reader, too. He speaks of the Dred-Scott case, and the suspension of habeus corpus, and if you aren't familiar with these things, you'll just have to look it up for himself. His analysis of the Gettysburg Address requires that you already know it, because only his paraphrase is presented.

Overall, I think the "short book" notion was taken a little too far. What was done in 65 pages could have had a little more flavor at perhaps 100 pages without losing the integrity of a "short account." But the goal of the book was achieved: As a brief overview of arguably America's greatest president, Abraham Lincoln: A Presidential Life succeeds.

Can a 65 page biography do Lincoln Justice?
By T. J. Mathews
Many noted authors have written countless volumes about the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. When I read that Civil War historian James McPherson had attempted, in only 65 pages, to capture the essence of the man who shepherded our nation through its greatest trials I was curious to see how well he could do.

I had my doubts at the first. When the first sentence starts out with "Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809..." I started to worry that there would be no more substance than a high school term paper. Fortunately, McPherson soon soothed my misgivings. After a somewhat dry synopsis of Lincoln's early life, McPherson briefly and with great insight touches on each and every key facet of Lincoln's career. He addressed the debates with Stephen Douglas, Lincoln's election and subsequent efforts to prevent secession, his role in the war, his relationship with his cabinet, his personal and official views on slavery and emancipation, and his attempts to negotiate a peace with the Confederacy.

In every chapter, McPherson's admiration for our sixteenth president shines through, even when discussing Lincoln's questionable suspension of habeas corpus. I found this part especially interesting in light of recent events. The Bush administration used the same arguments that Lincoln put forth to justify its suspension of civil liberties. One could argue that, justifiably or not, Lincoln opened a Pandora's Box that subsequent less-scrupulous presidents have taken advantage of.

I have read a great deal about this period in history and yet, on a page-for-page basis, there are few books that can shed as much insight into the heart and mind of our greatest president. I highly recommend this book.

Friends in Need Discover their Friends Indeed

Note: The publisher has unfortunately given the same exact titles to both the light novels and the numerically corresponding manga volumes, when they already had the same author and illustrator! Now, since the stories in both are basically identical, chances are that if you love one you will also love the other, with the novels giving you more details and the manga giving you more visuals. However, in order to purchase the version you actually want, you must be sitting on the correct product page.

Dungeons & Dragons the Fantasy Roleplaying Game has inspired countless novels and stories (and a hilarious comedy sketch about some gamers with goals somewhat similar to Bell's on Take Down The Grand Master by The Dead Alewives), not to mention an entire industry of roleplaying games, but very few good novels and stories incorporating anything of the game system itself. In fact I'd venture to say that this series is the first success at it and a true joy to read for gamers and non-gamers alike, besides.

The story continues from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 5 (novel).

The big reveal at the end of the previous novel (and the animated TV series) is that Bell is Zeus' grandson though he doesn't know it, in fact nobody but Hermes (and Zeus) appear to know it, but it obviously has huge implications. Moreover, thanks to Hermes, both Bell (and readers) get their first glimpse into the downfall and exile of Zeus (and Hera), and at whose hands (Loki's and Freya's primarily), which leaves a lot of things on a slow boil for the future.

In the meantime the bisexual bully Apollo has decided to act. In order to force Bell to join his familia he challenges Hestia to a wargame, and despite having all the advantages of wealth, numbers, and a higher level leader, Hyacinthus, Apollo proceeds to cheat like mad, destroying Hestia's and Bell's home and forcing them to agree to play (fight) a war game. So it is with his all hope gone that Bell learns who his friends are.

Goddess Hestia schemes like her back is to the wall (it is), the gods Miach, Takemikazuchi, and Hephaistos, each find a way to contribute a member, and Hermes finds a fourth (and you probably know who they are). Unable to join directly as Miach's only member Nahza provides pinpoint arrow fire wherever she can, and banned by Loki's neutrality, Aiz and Tiona combine to secretly give Bell the week long training session to top all training sessions. Syr contributes a mysterious good-luck charm. Welf madly dashes to forge weapons he would not forge, and on the day of battle does things he should not have to do. Lyu wields weapons she would not wield. Mikoto endures wielding a weapon that targets her first, but it is little Lilly who shoulders the heaviest burden. Taken out of the fight before it even starts by yet another dirty Apollo trick she will endure imprisonment, torture, beatings, and face down insanity before even beginning to contribute the key actions to victory, and even then she will ask if she was useful....

The adventure continues in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 7 (novel).

Fears Relieved
By Zeck
For clarity's sake, this review is for the LIGHT NOVEL of "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?" volume 6

After the end of volume 5 (and the anime, for that matter), I was worried about the direction this story was heading. Bell had just taken down a special super boss (despite being heavily wounded and exhausted), and while he hardly did it alone, the fact that he pulled it off kind of put me on edge. The reason being that I was afraid Bell was going heading into Naruto territory--that is to say, becoming so powerful so quickly that the story was quickly going to become unbelievable and boring.
After reading this book, I am happy to say that my fears have been laid to rest. Reader, ye be warned. Spoilers are in this review. I will mark them, but they are there.
And for those of you wondering, yes, this book picks up where the anime left off.

Our story starts with Lilly talking to Soma, her God, asking to be released from the Familia. Soma, being the ever useless God that he is (or is he?), pretty much ignores her and leaves the decision up to his primary follower, Zanis. And in case you couldn't tell--because everyone else in Soma Familia has been a jerk up to this point--Zanis says that Lilly can leave...for the price of ten million vals. Good luck, Lilly.

The story then cuts to Bell, Welf, and Lilly celebrating their victory on the 18th level and a few points are addressed.
1) Bell didn't receive enough exp. to hit level three, something I am extremely thankful for. This is because, despite getting the killing blow, it was actually Lyu and Asfi who fought the Goliath the longest, so they get the lion's share.
2) Welf, however, DID level up. He is now level two.
3) Bell's fame has grown even more, and this is where the main conflict of the story comes in.

A few other adventures sitting near Bell's party start talking smack about Bell. At first, this just seems like the normal trash talking Bell has had to endure from people who don't believe he's as good as the stories say. Bell fails to respond, so then the adventures start bad mouthing Welf and Lilly, but still things remain calm. So the adventures go for Bell's one sore spot: They insult Hestia. Bell loses it at this, but Welf delivers the opening blow. A brawl breaks out, and Bell notes how much slower these adventures are than him.
And then he promptly gets his nose smashed in by a level three adventurer by the name of Hibachitei, a member of the God Apollo's Familia. And it is made clear that, despite how powerful Bell seemed to be at the end of the last book, there are still plenty of things that can beat the snot out of him--much to my relief, if I'm honest.

The following day, Bell is confronted by two more of Apollo's followers, Daphne and Cassandra. They offer him an invite to Apollo's party, and Hestia tells him that they have to accept. She suspects some sort of trap--making her loathing of Apollo known to Bell, but not explaining why--but she feels that they must go in order to apologize for the fight that Bell "started" the other night.
What follows is a nice party with a lot of backstory revealed. Hermes gives Bell the story of Zeus and Hera, and how they used to be the most powerful Familias until they failed to complete the last of Three Great Quests. The final Quest that they failed? Slaying a dragon (because of COURSE it's a dragon). This is probably a glimpse of what will be Bell and his Familia's final test--slaying the dragon that even his Grandfather's (Father's?) Familia couldn't take down.
We also get a scene of Bell dancing with Aiz, and it's very sweet because Aiz is just as flustered as Bell about the whole thing, but her Sword Princess mask breaks and we get a glimpse of the cute girl she is in private--and then Loki and Hestia lose it and break the dance up.
Finally, Apollo enters the scene and he demands compensation from Hestia for the fight Bell started with his followers. Hephaestus steps in, pointing out the Welf actually started the fight, but Apollo brushes it aside. When Hestia refuses to apologize for Bell's action, Apollo makes a demand:
A War Game with Hestia's Familia.
Hestia refuses the War Game and storms out of the ball, and it suddenly becomes clear that Apollo has been planning this from the very start. His goal is to take Bell away from Hestia because he collects people he finds attractive--and Bell has fast become the talk of the Gods.

What follows is a break-neck pace in the story. Bell and Hestia are attacked the very next day, with Apollo sending pretty much his entire Familia after Bell. It's only thanks to the help from Bell's friends--Lord Take's Familia and Lord Micah's Familia--that he is able to stay one step ahead of the enemy Familia. Hestia, realizing that they are in a completely hopeless situation, decides to accept the War Game and tells Bell that he has one week to get stronger while she stalls for time.

SPOILERS FOLLOW!!!!!!

During the flight from Apollo's Familia, Lilly is forced to return to Soma's Familia because Soma's Familia is helping Apollo's. This is where the story diverges into two separate paths--one involving Bell training with Aiz and Tiona to get stronger, and one about Hestia, Welf, Nahza, and Mikoto rescuing Lilly.
During the rescue, it's revealed that Soma isn't a total jerk--he's just utterly disappointed in his Familia. The reason he gives them wine is to reward them for doing such a good job, but he lost faith in them when he saw how easily they lost their minds from it. But when Lilly shows that she can resist the wine in order to help save Bell, he's stunned and agrees to let her leave his Familia and join Hestia's.
Welf and Mikoto also leave their Familias and join Hestia's, thus increasing her total members to four. And, thanks to a little begging from Hermes, a certain character from the last novel is also talked into joining the fight on Bell's side (but not his Familia, because that would make the Familia too powerful too early in the story. Don't worry though, I'm sure she'll join up eventually).

But can five adventures really manage to win a War Game against one hundred enemies?
The answer is yes. I mean, did you really think Bell was going to be taken away from Hestia?
But the fun part is reading HOW Bell's ragtag team manages to claim victory. The tactics, the ploys, the tricks. Everything that they pull out is amazing--and the best part is, none of it is a surprise to the reader. No one suddenly has some new secret move that they've been saving, or some hidden power. Everyone uses skills that the reader has long been aware of, which makes it so much fun because you are left going, "Of course! Brilliant!"

SPOILERS END!!!!

Some Notes:

It's revealed that Loki and Freya are the ones that kicked Zeus and Hera out of the city. My guess: this is how Loki is going to be dealt with. There is no way she's giving Aiz up, but if Bell defeats her at some point further down the line because of what she did, or Loki comes after Bell once she finds out who he's related to and he's forced to take her down...

With the mention of Ares, the God of War, from several books ago, combined with the final Quest to slay the dragon, I think we now have two long-term stories to look forward to.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Lyu's Goddess is ever mentioned by name previously. She is here: Astria.

Hestia makes a not-at-shocking-to-us declaration to Bell, and Bell completely misses the point, much to her annoyance.

I want to know what happens to Cassandra and Daphne. I will be surprised if they do not show up again later.

I've long suspected that there's something up with Syr. This book only makes me think that even more. There's something about this girl that she is hiding from everyone else. I'm sure of it.

There is a touching scene at the end between Soma and Lilly. Probably the most touching scene in the story so far--yes, even better than when Lilly breaks down and demands to know why Bell saved her from the ants.

For some reason that baffles me, the artwork ceases to exist about halfway through the book. This is a true shame, because some of the fights really deserve to be shown. Can't WAIT for the manga of this story.

Much to my personal happiness, the vast majority of this book is NOT written in first-person narrative. I just don't like it when a story is written in that style, but if there are those of you who do, you have been warned.

Omori-san has an odd habit of writing dialogue, and then in the very next paragraph, telling the reader what was just said. It's...kind of annoying, honestly. Not enough to take off a star, but it does make me wonder if this is a Japanese thing.

Botttom Line: A lot of reviews have said that this is the best story so far. And I must say that I agree. Once the dance ends, the story picks up and sprints for the finish line--with still over half the book to go. The pacing is excellent, the action is solid, new characters are revealed, old characters are given much more depth, and most importantly, Bell is not shown to be stupidly overpowered like I feared.
And all of this happens without the characters setting foot in the dungeon once. If you wanted to know what happens next to Bell and his companions after the anime, then this book is a must read for you. For regular fans? Come on, is there any doubt? Pick it up.

Not what you'd expect based on the title.
By Robyn Lyons
Despite the title, this is a really well written and enjoyable series. If you looked at this and thought it would be a RomCom, you'd only be slightly correct. The title is almost an inside joke once you start reading.

Good action sequences with nice characters that you find little issue recalling who is who, despite a rather sprawling list of them.

If you passed this title up based on the title, give it a chance, you'd be pleasantly surprised. It's similar to not liking FPS video games and summarily dismissing Mass Effect not realising that it's actually an RPG.

Excellent Package
By Andrew Whitworth
As an engineering student, I have been exposed to a number of different textbooks on this subject, all with varying degrees of value. This book easily rises to the top of the pack. I will explain why.

Many books attempt to discuss the topic of electrical communication schemes through blunt mathematical rigor. Such an analysis may benefit the mathematically inclined, but leaves the rest of the students wanting. This book, however, is packaged with the excellent SystemVue software, a powerful software package that is used in industry to design actual communication systems. By utilizing the simulation software, in addition to providing a large number of images (graphs, constellation plots, output waveforms, etc), readers are given a visualization of the complex topics discussed in the text.

I think that it is incredibly valuable to be able to visualize the concepts being discussed, and I also think it is important to see how a physically-realizable system can come to certain results. The differing effects of BFSK and QPSK for instance, may be difficult to understand in a purely mathematical context, but by viewing the output waveforms, and spectrums comparatively, the user is able to quickly discern the differences between the two schemes.

The only qualm I would have about this book is that the version of SystemVue that comes with the book is a heavily watered down version, and is only capable of simulating the examples from the book (the user cannot use the software to create a new simulation). However, when you consider the sheer price of the SystemVue software suite, it is amazing that the book's author was able to include any version at all. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is new to the subject of communication systems, and even people who have had classes on the subject, but want to see the material presented in a more visual way. Because of the relative inexpensiveness of this book, It makes an excellent counterpart to other textbooks that are more steeped in the mathematically rigorous derivations.

Includes SystemVue Software - Sort Of
By John Matlock
Note the words 'Using SystemVue' in the title of this book. The title might reflect the content better if it included the word 'simulation' somewhere. As it is, this book is a supplement, or addition to a standard text in digital communications.

Having said that, this is an excellent book on simulation. For one thing, it includes the SystemVue software. To be sure, it's the Textbook Edition of the software, so it is quite limited in its functionality. That is, you can simulate the systems described in the text and manipulate them to see what happens. What you cannot do is use the included software to simulate your own system.

With this book and the included demo software you'll learn how to simulate digital communication systems. When you get out into the real world you can fork over a small fortune to get a real SystemVue. At least you'll know what to do with it.

A comprehensive survey suitable for a college course
By D. Donovan, Editor/Sr. Reviewer
Dennis Silage's DIGITAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING SYSTEMVUE would be a fine college text with its comprehensive survey of the Agilent SystemVue simulation environment. Advanced users of the communications simulator will find here plenty of analysis and insights on DSP processors and applications, offering pros and advanced digital communications users an introduction to the SystemVue environment using plenty of examples and results.

Save money!
By Kaila
I ordered the fifth edition to save money (before asking my professor if it was acceptable). Then, my professor suggested to buy this new version, so I did. I compared the 5th and 6th edition. So far, the only things I have noticed were: different pictures, a few statistic numbers changed (not much), and a few different citations. The publisher says there are about 2,000 new citations, but they just changed the names and have the exact same words, so it does not make a difference. Pictures may have changed, but the captions are almost exactly the same in both editions. So if you don't mind a few, different statistic numbers and would like to save money, get the fifth edition. I am now going to return the new edition.

About the Author
About Steve Blank
Steve Blank is a driving force in innovation, helping to radically reshape how startups are built and how entrepreneurship is taught. His new Startup Owner's Manual is his latest addition for entrepreneurial practitioners. Steve created the Customer Development methodology that spawned the Lean Startup movement. He teaches entrepreneurship at Stanford University, U.C. Berkeley and Columbia. His blog, steveblank.com, is "must" reading among entrepreneurs. In 2011, Steve created the Lean LaunchPad, a hands-on class using Customer Development to train students as well as elite teams of scientists and engineers selected and funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. Steve arrived in Silicon Valley in 1978, as boom times began, joining his first of eight startups. After 21 years the results were two deep craters, several "base hits," one massive "dot-com bubble" home run, and immense experiential learning that resulted his first break-through book, The Four Steps to the Epiphany.

About Bob Dorf
Bob Dorf is a serial entrepreneur, founding his first success at age 22 and, since then, six more--"two homeruns, two base hits, and three great tax losses," as he puts it. He's advised and/or invested in a score more startups since. Dorf is often called the "midwife of Customer Development," having critiqued early drafts of The Four Steps to the Epiphany; he and Steve have been friends and colleagues ever since. Entrepreneurial from his teens, Bob received his last W-2 almost 40 years ago, when he quit his editor's job at New York's WINS Radio to launch his first successful startup. When he's not running K&S Ranch Consulting with Steve, Dorf teaches "Introduction to Venturing," on Customer Development and getting startups right, as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School.

Interesting, easy read
By M. Hyman
This book is very different as a business book. Instead of being filled with dense, usually overly wordy pages, it is beautifully laid out, the wording is kept to a minimum, and there are lots of illustrations.

The book is focused on ways to think of the model for your business... with some nice guidelines for structuring the thought process... as well as a bunch of examinations of different types of businesses.

It has good discussions on thinking through what is critical for the business, where the cost structures are, where the benefits are, and how to organize and present those ideas.

It also has a number of cases studies of various companies that changed or invented new business models, such as Amazon's introduction of Web Services.

The book is fast to read, and there were several sections I bookmarked to put into use in my company, which to me is always a good sign for a book.

Where the book is lacking is that I would really have liked more case studies -- a bit more meat so to speak -- once a company came up with the new model, how did the artifacts of the book's discussions come into play with the execution? Did any of the techniques discussed help with the inevitable pitfalls associated? What are some case studies for when people tried the techniques discussed and failed miserably? Innovator's Dilemma, by comparison, does a much better look at both positive and negative case studies, which can provide a lot more learning.

I also would have liked more depth on the blue ocean discussion.

Altogether though, an interesting read and a good addition to my management book shelf.

A Decent Place to Start
By Ken Rider
"Business Model Generation" is a breezy read and a well-organized introduction to several related topics including: basic types of business models, techniques and strategies for generating ideas and thinking creatively about them, along with process steps for moving good ideas forward. But the promising title makes it sound like this is a more substantive resource than it really is.

PROS: Anyone new to these topics would likely have to read four to six separate books to get the broad coverage you'll find here. The authors have done a service for folks who want to come up to speed more quickly. I felt that I came away with some useful info in most of the chapters and each has additional references for further reading. The designers also deserve some credit for a creative and varied layout that makes the text seem fresher. Plus, you can feel good about yourself as you plow through 50+ pages in half an hour without fatigue. The bonus: this is a business book that won't have you drowning in business jargon.

CONS: As several reviewers have noted, there's breadth here but not much depth on the core topics. Those expecting more may be disappointed and some may find the book's suggestive title misleading. Probably more accurate if they called it "A *PRIMER* for Business Model Generation" instead of a Handbook. It's a place to get started, not a definitive resource as the term handbook implies. Finally, the small font sizes that a few reviewers mentioned will surely be difficult to read for those with less-than-great eyesight.

NOT the same as TSOM!
By Jessica
The kindle version of this is NOT the same as The Startup Owner's Manual! Instead you get the Startup Owner's Strategy Guide, which is a very condensed version. I bought this for a class and was super frustrated to find that it wasn't the same as the original hardcover book. I am going to try to get a refund because it's not what was advertised to me. Ugh.
