Inspired by the Indian Mutiny of 1857, "The Siege of Krishnapur" is set in the fictional town of that name where a British garrison withstands a four-month siege by mutineers. In "Troubles", Major Brendan Archer travels to Ireland in the aftermath of World War I in order to meet his fiancee Angela in a remote seaside hotel owned by her father. Angela dies unexpectedly, but Archer remains in Kilnalough, captivated by the Majestic and its inhabitants, and seemingly unaware of the approaching political storm as Ireland dissolves into revolt and civil war. Both novels combine high comedy with vivid realism and reveal Farrell as "one of the finest post-colonial novelists". (John Sutherland).

About the Author
J.G. Farrell was born in Liverpool in 1935 and spent a good deal of his life abroad, including periods in France and North America, and then settled in London where he wrote most of his novels. In April 1979 he went to live in County Cork where only four months later he was drowned in a fishing accident. INTRODUCER BIOGRAPHY: John Sutherland is Lord Northcliffe Professor Emeritus of Modern English Literature at University College London and currently teaches at the California Institute of Technology. He writes regularly for the Guardian and is the author of many books including The Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction, biographies of Scott and Spender, and The Boy Who Loved Books, a memoir.

Kritek (chair, mental health nursing and management, Univ. of Texas Sch. of Nursing, Galveston) received a National Leadership Fellowship from the Kellogg Foundation in 1986 to study conflict resolution. That study gave birth to this "record of lessons from [her] life experiences at uneven tables," i.e., negotiations where one side has power over another. Including examples from her own experiences as the nondominant negotiator, Kritek intends to encourage dialog about "dominant power." Rather than offering practical methods for achieving equality, she suggests ten "ways of being" (e.g., "be a truth teller," "be innovative") to provide a philosophical context for nondominant negotiators to use when approaching uneven tables. Unfortunately, Kritek's penchant for rambling philosophical reflections leads to writing that is verbose, repetitive, and prone to digression and forces the reader to look hard for substance. Not recommended.

Negotiating at an Uneven Table has become a vital tool for my personal self actualization, professional communication, and daily growth. After reading this book, it is clear to see that most, if not all, tables are uneven. Regardless of which side of the table your on, Dr. Kritek provides tools for honest and successful negotiation. Her examples of the valleys and mountain top experiences and tables of life bring the actual events of life into a different and clearer perspective. Her words are honest and direct while being full of compassion. The chapter regarding manipulation has been espicially critical in assisting me identifing common techniques used by myself and others to control life. I strongly suggest this book for anyone sincerely interested in becoming a more honest, compassionate, and fullfilled person. Regardless of your profession, negotiation is a part of living and daily communication. Dr. Kritek provides a perspective to understand what is occouring and how to arrive at a win-win outcome. If winning is not an option, she helps to identify this reality and show you when to walk away.

It provides practical exercises interwoven with real nursing stories and occurrences that allow individuals to personalize their approaches to addressing conflict with others. It provides the reader with the opportunity to reframe conflict and conflict management in a way that allows for resolution. A great read!

This is a wonderful collection of poems! Amazing translation! This book is also great for anyone teaching or studying Arabic; however the poems are really something anyone can relate to! They are very touching and insightful! There were a few poems in there that really resonated with me! I highly recommend.

Technical Information abound

Technical information about Single Mode, Multi Mode and all other applications, the mathematics and equations behind the science of Fiber Optics in this book are amazing, the first book I've read on this subject and had to have one of my own. not for the beginner, Contains advanced mathematics and theories of Fiber Optic cabling and data transfer, attenuation, and travel distance of different modes. Great Book for the professional FO tech.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit Is Alive and Well

This book can catapult anyone thinking about starting a business into actually putting in the work and making it happen. Unlike those only-believe-and-it-will-all-be-perfect books, though, this one is as real as keeping your tax records and taking inventory. It's about serious business that's also possible business, doable business, and successful business. Dudell draws on guidance from the TV Sharks to make this the guide for any entrepreneur in any kind of business at any point in the process. In addition to its self-help aspect, I found Shark Tank Jump Start Your Business inspiring and even a little bit patriotic. The 'job at the plant' and a gold watch at the end is no longer the way to the American dream. Creatively crafting your own talents and interests into a lucrative business is the way of things today. And when you think about it, that's a more satisfying dream anyway.

I love the Shark Tank and all of the Sharks, but this book does not deliver. It offers some basic and superficial advice for prospective business owners. This book is a waste of time for anyone who knows anything about business. It is well written and would be a great book for anyone who watches the show and has a vague pipe dream of starting a business "some day" and has never read anything about the topic. Other than that it is not worth the time. Good news is that it is well priced and im only out a few bucks.

Get the idea. I was hoping the book would be MORE from the sharks and LESS from the author, but no. This is just a lot of public domain articles about business, interspersed with what the author calls, "Shark Bites." And by that he means short quotes.

I listened to the Unabridged audio book - all five hours. It was really bad and had very little info from the sharks.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. Skip this one.

Fun and Useful in You're Interested in Technical Innovation

Intriguing book. Even though it's a few years old, still worth every penny. If you're interested in technical innovation, one of the things that emerges from this extensively researched book, is that a lot of technology was invented or discovered long before it was commercialized. Most of the time we attribute invention to the person who commercialized it. For example, Robert Fulton is often credited with "inventing" the steamboat, but Frenchman Jacques-Constantin Perier demonstrated one on the Seine in 1783 and in the US John Fitch demonstrated one in the US in 1787 establishing commercial service in 1790. Fulton isn't a player until 1807 with his Clermont.

The book is essentially set up in rows and columns with each double page covering 8 columns of topics: General, Architectural and Construction, Communication, Energy, Food and Agriculture, Materials, Medical Technology, Tools & Devices, and Transportation. The transecting rows cover one or more years and though the book goes back to the stone age, the bulk of the coverage runs from about 1000 to 1990.

No depth of course, but it'w well indexed and an excellent resource as a starting point if you want to track history. Good "chain" references as well. In some ways the internet search has made this obsolete, but I've found that if you want to drill down on something, this does a better job of providing a starting point than most internet searches.
