The Durable Slum: Dharavi and the Right to Stay Put in Globalizing Mumbai (Globalization and Community), by Liza Weinstein

In the center of Mumbai, next to the city’s newest and most expensive commercial developments, lies one of Asia’s largest slums, where as many as one million squatters live in makeshift housing on one square mile of government land. This is the notorious Dharavi district, best known from the movie Slumdog Millionaire. In recent years, cities from Delhi to Rio de Janeiro have demolished similar slums, at times violently evicting their residents, to make way for development. But Dharavi and its residents have endured for a century, holding on to what is now some of Mumbai’s most valuable land.

In The Durable Slum, Liza Weinstein draws on a decade of work, including more than a year of firsthand research in Dharavi, to explain how, despite innumerable threats, the slum has persisted for so long, achieving a precarious stability. She describes how economic globalization and rapid urban development are pressuring Indian authorities to eradicate and redevelop Dharavi—and how political conflict, bureaucratic fragmentation, and community resistance have kept the bulldozers at bay. Today the latest ambitious plan for Dharavi’s transformation has been stalled, yet the threat of eviction remains, and most residents and observers are simply waiting for the project to be revived or replaced by an even grander scheme.

Dharavi’s remarkable story presents important lessons for a world in which most population growth happens in urban slums even as brutal removals increase. From Nairobi’s Kibera to Manila’s Tondo, megaslums may be more durable than they appear, their residents retaining a fragile but hard-won right to stay put.

Review
"There remains a dearth of rigorous and creative monographs that present a sound analysis of urbanism and urban processes in Indian cities. The Durable Slum clearly fills this gap. In particular, Mumbai, often the subject of popular writing, does not have an iconic academic monograph that provides insights into the workings of the city. This is such a text. Liza Weinstein's work presents the sociological research and analysis that can transform the megaslum from a horizon of popular imagination into a field of inquiry." —Ananya Roy, University of California, Berkeley

"An important addition to the work being done on urban poverty."—Economic and Political Weekly

"[The Durable Slum] is a significant contribution to the literature on urban transformations and the durability of low-income residents and their settlements. "—Pacific Affairs

"The Durable Slum not only adds to the scholarship on the political economy of Dharavi, but through analysis of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) also forms an important contribution to the question of how poor, seemingly-powerless slum populations respond to the totalising forces of global capital, and how they manage ‘to stay put’."—South Asia: Journal of South Asia Studies

"Weinstein has produced a noteworthy book, which reminds us of the importance of long-term research in grasping the entangled and locally varying facets of urban processes."—disP= The Planning Review

"The Durable Slum is well worth reading and teaching and provides novel insights that apply to urban contexts near and far, domestic and international."—Social Forces

All in all a great read, especially for a Mumbaikar like me
By Vikram
I checked this book out from the library, read it and intend to buy it soon. The book offers the reader a glimpse of Mumbai's present and past through the perspective of its most (in)famous locality, Dharavi. Starting from the colonial Raj, to which Mumbai own its origin, Weinstein shows how Dharavi has been marginalized, imagined and manipulated by the city's economic and political elite, and how it has increasingly gained its voice with the introduction of democracy. Yet, this voice is still restricted to pleading/protesting/demanding the right to merely survive. The right to articulate their future and communicate their aspirations is still silenced by a state more interested in NRI dollars and bureaucratic 'master-plans'.

The book is a product of the author's multi-year stay in Dharavi as a young Marathi and Hindi speaking PhD scholar, so she is able to combine her sharp intellect and technical training with on the ground data from her friends and co-workers in Dharavi. She offers vignettes of individual lives intertwined with the broader narratives and forces swirling around.

All in all a great read, especially for a Mumbaikar like me.

    A Comprehensive and Easy-to-Use Guide
    By Suzie
This is a thorough and well-written book, which goes into great detail about the skulls of each North American mammal species, in addition to having a section on birds and reptiles/amphibians. The first several chapters, which I found surprisingly readable given the technical subject matter, are devoted to identifying skull bones and landmarks as well as interpreting the function and meaning behind various skull features, determining age and sex, and even obtaining, cleaning and preparing your own animal skulls. What I found most helpful in this book were the real-life sized illustrations of both skulls and jaws, which the author conveniently locates in one section of the book, for easy comparison. I was amazed at how easy it was to identify skulls I had found in years past- skulls that I had spent hours attempting to identify using information pieced together from the internet and other sources. This book is not only incredibly thorough and rich with information, but also well-organized and easy to understand, with helpful diagrams and plenty of beautiful, detailed illustrations. Overall, it is an excellent book that I will be sure to refer back to many times in the future.

Finally a Real Guide to Skulls
    By Outside
A complete book on skulls was not available until this one was so beautifully put together. Elbroch introduces the rather complex study of skulls in such a way that anyone can easily learn the language and terms to more precisely discuss and understand their many and varied features. He goes well beyond simply identifying what species a given skull is from and delves into functions of structures of the skull, how they change with age as well as how they compare with those of other species (not to mention variations found within a given species). Mammals (and their jaws, 188 in all), birds (71), amphibians and reptiles (13) are covered in great detail within the 700+ pages of this book. Clear color prints, drawings and heaps of data round out what I believe to be the most comprehensive guide of its kind. Well done Mark and well worth the cost.

Aristotle: On Sleep and Dreams (Classical Texts) (Ancient Greek Edition), by David Gallop

This work is designed to make Aristotle's neglected but
fascinating writings on sleep and dreams accessible in
translation to modern readers, and to provide a commentary with a
contemporary perspective. It considers Aristotle's theory of
dreams in historical context, especially in relation to Plato. It
also discusses neo-Freudian interpretations of Aristotle and
contemporary experimental psychology of dreaming. Aristotle's
account of dreaming as a function of the imagination is examined
from a philosophical perspective. The work is revised and
corrected version of the North American edition.

Needs more Aristotle, less David Gallop
    By Kieran Fox
This book is a translation of Aristotle's three most important (arguably?) works on sleep and dreams, alongside the original Greek: De Somno et Vigilia (On Sleep and Waking), De Insomniis (On Dreaming), and De Divinatione per Somnum (On Divination through Sleep) - yes, indeed it's confusing that these Ancient Greek works are known by their Latin titles - one of history's hiccups.

Philosopher/historian David Gallop has done us a valuable service by collecting these three works into a single slim and readable volume, but all the merits of this book lie in Aristotle's own words, not Gallop's. Unfortunately, Aristotle's work comprise a tiny minority of this work (about 25 pages), whereas nearly a hundred pages are devoted to Gallop's rambling notes, comments, qualifications, etc. Some are useful, and I guess this is simply the genre, but much of it is simple repetition of what Aristotle has clearly stated and is unnecessary. The introduction (50 pages!) plods along in an intensely dry, academic, pedantic (I hope that's not a doubly redundant description) tone. Worst of all is that Gallop attempts to tie Aristotle's theories in with 'modern' dream science and the study of REM sleep; unfortunately, he chooses as comparisons the works of Freud, Francis Crick (of double helix fame) and N. Malcolm - even were these authors' ideas not largely out-of-date and discredited even at the time of this book's publication (1990), they are quite possibly three of the most moronic theories about dreams ever put into print. As a result these (lengthy and ponderous) sections fall completely flat, as Gallop vainly dissects minute points in arguments shown to be moot long ago. Gallop may be an expert in Greek and on Aristotle, but he seems to know almost nothing of the modern science of sleep and dreams, apart from those few sources cited above.

On to Aristotle: certainly there is a fair bit of chaff here, and even some unintentional howlers in the philosopher's explanations for some things, but by and large the most striking thing is how modern and scientific his musings on sleep and dreams are. In fact, I'm tempted to say Aristotle's discussion is a considerable cut above many contemporary 'theories' of dreaming, especially among the 'New Age' and, come to think of it, even Freud's tortured meanderings. Aristotle correctly identifies many features of sleep and dreams, such as that the body drops in temperature during sleep, that sleep and dreaming are apparently common to almost all animals, that lucid dreaming is possible, that the essence of dreams is that the central apparatus which usually processes sensory data is active without the constraint of external stimuli, while meanwhile the faculty of judgment or reason is attenuated (almost exactly the modern scientific understanding, except that Aristotle thinks this central organ is the heart, not the brain - but give the guy a break!). He also preempts (by about 2500 years) Freud's alleged 'discovery' of day residue: that things sensed/perceived during the preceding day or so tend to reappear in modified form in dreams.

If you're really interested in sleep and/or dreams, I'd recommend taking a look into this book - but I don't think it's worth buying, by any means (especially considering how expensive even used editions appear to be online). All three of Aristotle's works translated here are freely available online (just do a search for the titles I mentioned above), and Gallop's lengthy notes add very little to the discussion and could easily be done without. If your library has this, though, it's always nice to read things on paper.

China's Son: Growing Up in the Cultural Revolution, by Da Chen

A candid memoir about growing up during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, adapted by the author from his Colors of the Mountain, published by Random House.

Da Chen was born in China in 1962. The grandson of a landlord, he and his family were treated as outcasts in Communist China. In school, Da was an excellent student until a teacher told him that, because of his “family’s crimes,” he could never be more than a poor farmer. Feeling his fate was hopeless, Da responded by dropping out and hanging around with a gang. However, after Mao’s death, Da realized that an education and college might be possible, but he had to make up for the time he’d wasted. He began to study–all day and into the night. His entire family rallied to help him succeed, working long hours in the rice fields and going into debt to ensure that Da would have an education. When the final exam results were posted, he had one of the highest scores in the region and had earned a place at the prestigious Beijing University. Now his family’s past would not harm their future.

    Amazon.com Review
Born in 1962 in southern China, Da Chen had monumental hurdles to overcome before he could even walk or talk. Mao Tse-tung's Cultural Revolution was in full swing, and the descendents of landlords, who were despised, were routinely stripped of their wealth, beaten, humiliated, and sent off to labor camps. Da Chen, the grandson of a landlord, lives several parallel lives: he excels in school but then gives up studying in the face of unbearable pressure and harassment from teachers, students, and administrators. He is a self-taught musician but also a member of a gang of toughs. His siblings, banned from school, work from before sunrise to sunset in the muddy, backbreaking rice fields. But eventually all the dichotomies in Da's life come together, and he makes a break for a new life, with higher education as his foundation for future success.

Da Chen's engrossing memoir, adapted for younger readers from his book Colors of the Mountain, paints a colorful, painful, sometimes humorous picture of life during the 1960s and '70s, when formerly privileged Chinese families were at the mercy of Chairman Mao and his ruthless Red Guard soldiers. The writing is at times jerky, other times poetic, and Da Chen's time frame can be confusing. However, this is a book young readers will not soon forget, especially if it's their first glimpse of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter

    From Publishers Weekly
Adapted for young adults from Chen's memoir (Colors of the Mountain), this coming-of-age tale traces the author's boyhood in Maoist China. Born in 1962, Chen grows up in privation and humiliation as the grandson of former landlords. His family has been stripped of property and is cruelly treated by fellow villagers and politicos. Chen's siblings must quit school to become farmers, his father is fired from his teaching job and repeatedly hauled off to labor camp, and his grandfather is publicly beaten. Chen's only recourse is to excel at his studies ("I shone, despite their efforts to snuff me out"). The pacing here lurches a bit; what may have worked well for adult audiences could throw younger readers. However, humor and unflinching honesty inform the narrative, which is shot through with lyrical descriptions ("my fate stood undecided, wavering in the wind like a blade of grass along the Dong Jing River"). Some of the most involving scenes revolve around the boy's gradual inclusion in a Huck Finn-esque gang that cares little about his privileged background. Young adults interested in this area of history may wish to read Ji-li Jiang's recent Red Scarf Girl, which chronicles her adolescence at the time Mao was taking power. Chen's reminiscences add another intriguing perspective on this turbulent time. Ages 12-up.

    From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-China's Son is a retelling for young readers of Da Chen's memoir, Colors of the Mountain (Random, 2000), a book easily accessible to older middle and high school students without adaptation. During the Cultural Revolution, even people living in remote villages like Yellow Stone in southern China felt its effects. The author grew up in this small village, and because his grandfather was a landlord, his family was persecuted. Though he was a bright boy and remained in school for most of this period, he was mistreated by students and teachers alike. He eventually began hanging around with a gang of young gamblers and soon abandoned his lessons altogether though he continued to attend school. The Cultural Revolution ran its course, and college became an option. At this point, Da Chen realized how limited his future would be without an education, but by now, he was woefully behind his classmates. He and his older brother began a rigorous course of study to prepare for college entrance exams. Da Chen's admission to Beijing First Foreign Language Institute is the culmination of a powerful but dry coming-of-age story about a young man struggling to figure out just who he is in a society whose very structure is undergoing massive change. China's Son joins Ji-Li Jiang's Red Scarf Girl (HarperCollins, 1997) and Song Nan Zhang's A Little Tiger in the Chinese Night (Tundra, 1993) as part of a growing body of literature about children living during this difficult period of Chinese history.

    China's Boy-Definately an engrossing read!
    By A Customer
As a 12 year old student, I was assigned to read China's Son as a class project. As usual, I took one look at the cover and felt discouraged. But as I worked my way through the book, I actually began to understand the meaning of Da Chen's words.
Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution was difficult for poverty stricken Da Chen. The book shows how he deals with his hardships, going from top student to the child no one likes, just because of his social standing. Da even joins a gang of hoodlums in his neighborood, and slowly becomes disinterested in the school he once loved. After dealing with family issues, Da realizes that he wants more in life then to become an uneducated farmer. Determined to succeed, he studies to enter one of China's best collages. Da Chen leaves readers on edge, hoping and praying that Da will make it into collage.
Although the book started off slowly for me, I would most definately reccomend it to any jr. through high schooler. Reading about Da Chen's determination is inspirational!

Interesting child account of the Cultural Revolution
    By A Customer
As an adult interested in China and the Cultural Revolution and having traveled many times to China, I read this book not really expecting to glean much from it. It was well written though and appropriately rated. I found Da Chen a character I could relate with (even as an adult) and discovered his account to be full of emotion: frightened, bitter, angry, excited, happy etc.. I think most of the "facts" were presented in truth.
