A space enthusiast goes inside mission control with a motley crew of rocket scientists in this “fascinating journey of discovery peppered with humor” (Publishers Weekly).
The Phoenix Mars mission was the first man-made probe ever sent to the Martian arctic. Its purpose was to find out how climate change could turn a warm, wet planet (read: Earth) into a cold, barren desert (read: Mars). Along the way, Phoenix discovered a giant frozen ocean trapped beneath the north pole of Mars, exotic food for aliens, and liquid water, and laid the foundation for NASA’s current exploration of Mars using the Curiosity rover.
This is not science fiction. It’s fact. And for the luckiest fanboy in fandom, it was the best vacation ever. Andrew Kessler spent the summer of 2008 in NASA’s mission control with one hundred thirty of the world’s best planetary scientists and engineers as they carried out this ambitious operation. He came back with a story of human drama about modern-day pioneers battling NASA politics, temperamental robots, and the bizarre world of daily life in mission control.

Readers will thrill to this slightly offbeat firsthand account of scientific determination and stubborn intellect. Kessler, producer of a Discovery Channel documentary on Mars and the self-professed winner of "the space-nerd lottery," was allowed to shadow the 2009 Phoenix Mars Lander mission, which would make the groundbreaking discovery of water and ice on Mars. A product of NASA's 1990s "faster, cheaper, better" mantra, Phoenix had none of the space program's usual bells and whistles, with a recycled lander and a mission control with a decided "church basement aesthetic." But there was free ice cream. Offered this unique opportunity, Kessler felt some self-doubt and had trouble adjusting to a work schedule set by the long Mars days. But along with his own witty personality, he captures the lively scientists behind the project, from Peter Smith, "world's greatest Martian Photographer," to Matt Robinson, a robot arm expert. Kessler also captures the frustrations and triumphs of a project in which a 15-minute communications lag between Mars and Earth meant anything could go wrong. This behind-the-scenes look delivers a fascinating journey of discovery peppered with humor. (Apr.)

Review
“An informative and even charming semi-insider account of how such a mission operates, how humans fare on Mars time, and how scientists and administrators behave under extreme stress.” —The Washington Post
“Readers will thrill to this slightly offbeat firsthand account of scientific determination and stubborn intellect. . . . This behind-the-scenes look delivers a fascinating journey of discovery peppered with humor.” —Publishers Weekly
“A candid and precise account of the ups and downs of a space mission. This book shows what it is to participate in a short and intense landed Mars expedition. It gives the feel of the pressure and excitement at mission control, where engineers, managers and scientists work together while trying to satisfy contradictory requirements, showing the human side of science with refreshing honesty.” —Nilton Renno, professor of atmospheric and space sciences, University of Michigan
“It is as if I imagined Holden Caulfield writing about the mission. Martian Summer is a riot.” —Peter Smith, professor, Lunar and Planetory Laboratory, University of Arizona, and principal investigator of the Phoenix Project

A Mission Near the Limits of Mankind's Technology
By J.R. McAuley
I recommend the book. It is an exhaustive (that's good) detailing of the Phoenix Mar Mission. It is also, at time, exhausting in its minutiae. Overall, it is worth the read. Few people understand how near the edge of failure space missions are. This becomes clear in Andrew Kessler's book. I worked in the aerospace industry myself (Apollo Telescope Mount ultraviolet spectroheliograph telescope on Skylab) and didn't realize how near the edge we were, though the company I worked for lost two employees, killed in the accidental ignition of a solid fuel rocket when mounting an Orbital Solar Observatory atop a rocket. Though unmanned, the Phoenix Mars Mission still had its share of frayed nerves awaiting results and dreading the possibility that things could go wrong.

Engaging, candid, honest, hilarious - get intimate with a NASA mission
By Greg
Andrew Kessler is a writer who spent ninety days with the team of engineers and scientists who managed NASA's Phoenix mission - a mission which sent a lander to the Martian icecap, discovered water ice and perchlorate, and sent back beautiful panoramas of the stark, stormswept landscape. His account is candid, honest, and detailed - and hilarious - and offers a rare glimpse of an actual interplanetary exploration mission.
In it's journal-like style, the reader sees the mission through his eyes and gains a thorough picture of both the engineering challenges and triumphs as well as the relationships between team members, the interaction between the Phoenix team and their superiors at NASA headquarters, and their constant battle to engage the public somehow while resisting the media's thirst for sensational stories, while Kessler's quirky personality keeps the narrative fresh and engaging. A rare book.

The Fly-on-the-Wall Perspective of a NASA Mission
By R. Hanton
It's great to read a book about space geekery and missions to Mars that isn't being written by an engineer, but rather a writer that thinks space is interesting. You get a chance to follow Kessler as he infiltrates the NASA Phoenix mission that almost never occurred (they refurbished a formerly-trashed Mars lander to make it work on the cheap). You feel like you're right there with him, coming into the secretive techno-world of mission control, not sure what you're trying to write and just hoping that you won't get kicked out your first day on the job.
He eventually reveals both the amazing scheduling and discovery involved in commanding a Mars mission taking place 100 million miles away and some of the challenges the team faces when dealing with NASA politics and tough mission choices. The day-by-day play-by-play can become a bit tiresome, but this is definitely an interesting book to read for the space enthusiast or the budding Mars researcher.
