Bernard Faure introduces readers to medieval Japanese religiosity and shows the centrality of the gods in religious discourse and ritual. Throughout he engages theoretical insights drawn from structuralism, post-structuralism, and Actor-Network Theory to retrieve the “implicit pantheon” (as opposed to the “explicit orthodox pantheon”) of esoteric Japanese Buddhism (Mikkyō). His work is particularly significant given its focus on the deities’ multiple and shifting representations, overlappings, and modes of actions rather than on individual characters and functions.

In Protectors and Predators Faure argues that the “wild” gods of Japan were at the center of the medieval religious landscape and came together in complex webs of association not divisible into the categories of “Buddhist,” “indigenous,” or “Shinto.” Furthermore, among the most important medieval gods, certain ones had roots in Hinduism, others in Daoism and Yin-Yang thought. He displays vast knowledge of his subject and presents his research―much of it in largely unstudied material―with theoretical sophistication. His arguments and analyses assume the centrality of the iconographic record as a complement to the textual record, and so he has brought together a rich and rare collection of more than 170 color and black-and-white images. This emphasis on iconography and the ways in which it complements, supplements, or deconstructs textual orthodoxy is critical to a fuller comprehension of a set of medieval Japanese beliefs and practices and offers a corrective to the traditional division of the field into religious studies, which typically ignores the images, and art history, which oftentimes overlooks their ritual and religious meaning.

Protectors and Predators and its companion volumes should persuade readers that the gods constituted a central part of medieval Japanese religion and that the latter cannot be reduced to a simplistic confrontation, parallelism, or complementarity between some monolithic teachings known as “Buddhism” and “Shinto.” Once these reductionist labels and categories are discarded, a new and fascinating religious landscape begins to unfold.

In addition, she has the distinction of being recognized as a Diplomate in school psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology for her advanced level of competence in the field of school psychology. Dr. Moss has been appointed as a fellow in the American Academy of School Psychology.

Not as readable and interactive as I expected

I am a school counselor and I was looking for a workbook with activities to help work on students' confidence and self esteem. I guess I misunderstood what this book was- It's written in a kind of textbook format. It has stories and anecdotes to make it more readable, and the concepts are explained really well. As an adult, I found it helpful! But I can't imagine sitting with an 8-13 yr. old and getting through a book that is long and at points can be a bit of a tedious read. Perhaps if it was done only a bit at a time it might work.. Overall, if what you're looking for is a thorough analysis and explanation of confidence and self esteem for kids, this book does a good job of that.

Easy Reading -- Covers Extremely Important Topics for Kids

I wish this book was around when I was a kid. In a conversational manner, this author communicates specific tools that kids can use to feel better about themselves and about how they relate to others. There are also examples of how kids have already addressed issues of confidence and self-esteem. It is a book that parents and kids may even want to read together to discuss the key points.

Wonderful book for both kids and adults!

This book gives concrete ways that kids can begin to feel better about themselves. The vocabulary and writing style captivate young people (it's for ages 8-13). The graphics are beautifully done too. While this book is great to help kids, it can actually make adults think about their own confidence level and ways to improve it. A must buy!

The manner in which psychiatric conditions were and still are formulated in the compilations of Caraka, Susruta, Vagbhata, and Bela are reviewed and compared along with religious and spiritual viewpoints. Discussion of approach to conditions of psychiatric interest rooted in traditional Indian values provides a basis for critique and plea for broadening the scope and depth of the already vibrant and scientifically compelling psychiatry of contemporary India. The book aims to make modern psychiatry more responsive to India s understanding of the human condition.

Classic Literature turned trashy

This was the first of Abigail Reynolds books I've read. I loved P&P and all of Austen's books as well as some of the variations I've read. The story idea was good...Darcy facing competition was a great idea... the middle to end of the story was TERRIBLE...it was nothing but descriptions of Darcy and Elizabeth's premarital sexual encounters. The likelihood that the Elizabeth Bennet(or even Mr. Darcy with his sense of right and wrong) I read about behaving in such a way especially after Lydia's disgrace is impossible and unbelievable. I like a good storyline if you can skip the sex scenes and still have a good story but this was almost as bad as Linda Berdoll's Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. I hated it and am not going to read any of the other books in the series or by this author. This book was classic literature rewritten to make it a trashy novel.

Interesting Twist and a Lovely Tale

Taken as just a romantic tale, Without Reserve is a very satisfying read.
But, readers of Pride and Prejudice will find this to be a very original and satisfying variation. The idea of Darcy faced with another suitor for Elizabeth's hand makes an excellent story, and provides a look at some of the social customs of the time. It also provides some heart-wrenching moments as well as some beautifully romantic scenes. The interactions between the main characters, Darcy and Elizabeth are beautifully evocative. The use of Blake's poetry serves to complement the story and helps to frame the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth.

I love this story - I've read it over and over again. It keeps your interest throughout, and should appeal to a wide range of readers.

If I could have given this book zero stars I would have. It was terrible. It is a trashy romance novel with the names of Jane Austen's beloved characters thrown in it. I love Jane Austen and I love Elizabeth Bennett because I always felt like I related to her. This version of Elizabeth is so silly and stupid I had no respect for her at all. She agrees to marry a man she does not love? Unheard of! And though I am sure Mr. Darcy had desires for Elizabeth sexually he was a GENTLEMAN in every form of the word and would never have compromised Elizabeth as he does in this book. The Mr. Darcy in this book was no gentleman. I liked the idea of these "what if" books but they are done all wrong. The characters that I know and love would have never acted in the manner that they do in this book. I will not be reading anymore of the Pride and Prejudice Variations.

I LOVE this book!!!

I almost never write Amazon reviews, but feel compelled to in the case of this gem of a textbook.

Quick about me:
-solid general computer skills (e.g. Excel), but NO programming background
-took statistics in high school, barely passed calculus in college
-was inspired to learn R after seeing a colleague use it for data analysis
-have been disappointed by R texts that I've encountered thus far, finding them either too advanced or poorly organized/written

Why I am giving this book 5 stars:
-it is structured very logically, starting with the basics of the language before moving onto programming, statistics, and more advanced concepts
-it is accessible to a wide audience, yet goes into the necessary level of detail
-it is well written, in an easy, clear voice
-an appropriate balance of text vs code examples and graphics
-it has effective exercises at logical points to ensure the reader not only understands, but can execute the concepts learned
-it is aesthetically very nice -- the spine doesn't crack, the book doesn't warp over time, the font and text size are very readable

As a sidenote, I ordered R for Dummies as well. I didn't give it an especially thorough glance, but quickly flipped through it and decided to return it because I knew on first glance that The Book of R was far superior.

Philipa Patricia Kuranchie was born in Ghana at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo. Since her childhood, Philipa has demonstrated her deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ, her, siblings, school mates and parents.

Around eight [8] years of age, she started sharing the word of God with her colleagues and even serves as the “pastor” in her home.

During her ninth year, the LORD started speaking to her and showing her visions. And when she became ten [10], the LORD started visiting her at home, and taken her to both Heaven and hell where a lot had been shown her.

The Lord Jesus Christ still visit her any moment he likes and at any time Philipa calls Him.

Philipa who is now eleven [11] years of age stays with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Kuranchie of the Church of Pentecost and are now stationed in Kumasi the second capital city of Ghana with her siblings Prince, Pamela and Esther. They were formally missionaries in the Republic of Guinea.

The Lord Jesus has asked her to share these revelations and messages of the end time with the world.

Phillipa a lil 12 yr old girl goes to heaven again (this is her second book) where she is given many end time revelations. Jesus comes to this child and takes her to heaven he shows her mansion and things he has prepared for the saints, things such as are favorite foods, anything we desire like different colors or having your house painted gold. Her mansion and the way she describes it is a dream you would have to get the book and see for urself. There are special gifts waiting and he lavious this little girl because of her dedication to him and sharing the gospel and spreading the divine end time revelations. There are many surprises, fine things beyond ure imagination and the way she describes the joy and love and peace and her enthusium. Most of all she expresses how much Jesus loves us.

You guys Jesus is handsome she says he is beyond compare I always wonder how he looked which was conforting altho if he wasnt handsome it wouldnt mean I wouldnt love him because, he died for us but it was just something interesting to know. He is so loving and really delicate and sweet towards her I see why the mysterious are hidden from un child like people. There are animals up there and they talk and that heaven is so wonderful that even the animals said to do the best you can to make it up there and Phillipa said even the floor in heaven is better to be on than on the earth! I was like wow it is making me wish to be just even on the ground in heaven let alone just being with Jesus. The way she goes to heaven in chariots, by angles and how the angles are always surrounded by her and the love Jesus has.. The food is prepared for us the way we want it in our heavenly refridgator shows how close it is for the coming rapture. Also you get a laptop up there and will be able to chat, it just makes me wonder what else all is up there and how gracious God is. Its a must read

A WONDERFUL BOOK FOR BOTH CHRISTIANS NON CHRISTIANS

AFTER READING THIS BOOK, I HAVE COME TO AGREE THE MORE WITH THE APOSTLE PAUL THAT,OUR PRESENT SUFFERINGS IS NOTHING TO BE COMPARED WITH WHAT AWAIT US IN HEAVEN (ROMANS 8:18). SO MY DEAR BRETHREN, AS YOU READ THIS BOOK MAKE EVERY EFFORT NOT TO MISS THIS WONDERFUL PLACE CALLED HEAVEN. THANK YOU.
